A Mind Renewed by the Word of God

“I beseech you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:1-2, NKJV.

Everyone is being formed by something. Our habits, assumptions, desires, and judgments are shaped by voices that tell us what is normal, admirable, and true. The apostle Paul therefore commands believers not to be conformed to this age, but to be transformed by the renewing of the mind so that they may discern the will of God. The Christian mind is not renewed by vague spirituality. Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them by Your truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17). Scripture gives light to the simple (Psalm 119:130), exposes the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12), and equips God’s people for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16). Through the Word, God corrects not only our answers but also our questions. Wisdom requires more than quoting isolated verses. We must learn the WHOLE counsel of God; creation and fall, covenant and kingdom, incarnation and the cross, resurrection and new creation. This biblical story teaches us to recognize both human dignity and human depravity. It keeps us from naive optimism because sin is real, and from cynical despair because redemption is real. We must be diligent students of the Word (Acts 17:11; 2 Timothy 2:15).

A renewed mind learns discernment. Philippians 1:9-10 joins love with knowledge so believers may approve what is excellent. Hebrews 5:14 describes mature people whose powers of discernment are trained by practice. Wisdom distinguishes what is true from what is merely persuasive, what is urgent from what is important, and what is permissible from what is beneficial (1 Corinthians 10:23). Christians must be the wisest people in society because they possess a revelation that judges every culture, including their own. We must not merely baptize the assumptions of a political faction, social class, generation, or marketplace. Every idea must be taken captive to obey the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). The Word of God confronts greed when society praises accumulation, pride when society rewards self-promotion, vengeance when society demands retaliation, and falsehood when society excuses useful lies.

The renewed mind is also marked by intellectual humility. Scripture gives certainty where God has spoken and restraint where He has not. Deuteronomy 29:29 distinguishes the secret things belonging to God from the revealed thing entrusted to us. We are not supposed to know everything. We are to know the One who is the source of all wisdom and knowledge. Wise Christians do not pretend to know what they do not know. They listen carefully, examine evidence honestly, receive correction gratefully, and refuse to manipulate facts for a preferred conclusion. When the Word dwells richly among believers (Colossians 3:16), it creates people who can recognize deception and articulate truth with grace. Such people become a gift to society. They bring moral memory into cultural amnesia, enduring truth into passing fashions, and principled judgment into emotional reaction. A renewed mind does not withdraw from the world; it enters the world to see clearly.
